KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 28, 2017) – The USMMA tennis team defeated visiting non-conference opponent Western Connecticut State, 8-1, on a beautiful Friday afternoon at the Brooks Stadium Courts. With the win, the Mariners improve to 8-4 on the season, while the Colonials' record drops to 4-10.
Merchant Marine swept all three doubles positions, with the teams of senior Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) and freshman Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) at #2 and junior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) and freshman Daniel Kim (Porter Ranch, Calif.) at #3 starting the match with 8-0 victories. That was followed by an 8-1 triumph by the Mariners' top flight pairing of senior James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and junior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.).
In singles action, McGaffigan and Kendall finished quickly within minutes of each other to clinch the team win – McGaffigan won 6-1, 6-0 at #3, followed by Kendall at #4, whose serve game was strong today to pick up a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set sweep.
Kim won a 6-0, 6-1 decision at #6 before WestConn's only victory of the day came at #5. McDonough at #2 (6-0, 6-2) and Hicks at #1 (6-3, 6-2) concluded the match with wins for USMMA.
Up next, the Mariners will travel out to Patchogue, N.Y., tomorrow morning, Saturday, April 29, for their regular season finale at St. Joseph's of Long Island in the make-up of the match that was scheduled for this past Wednesday. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Golden Eagles' SJC Outdoor Complex.
