Tennis Downs Farmingdale On Senior Day, 7-2

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 8, 2017) – The USMMA tennis team defeated visiting Farmingdale State, 7-2, in a Skyline Conference matchup Saturday at the Brooks Stadium Courts. With the victory, the Mariners' record moves to 5-3 (3-1 Skyline), while the Rams fall to 3-5 (0-2 Skyline).
 
Prior to the match, the USMMA tennis program paid tribute to its two graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) and James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.).
 
On the courts, the Mariners went ahead 2-1 after doubles play concluded. The #2 flight of Kendall and junior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) finished first with an 8-2 win, followed by an 8-3 triumph at #1 by Hicks and freshman James McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.). The Rams won in a tie-breaker at #3, 9-8 (7-5).
 
After dropping the #6 flight to begin singles action, the top five flights all finished out the match with wins for Merchant Marine. Schwartz claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win at #4, followed by a 7-5, 6-2 win by McGaffigan at #2 and a 7-5, 6-0 victory at #3 by Kendall. Hicks won his second match of the day in three sets at #1, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6 in the tie-breaker) and freshman Daniel Kim (Porter Ranch, Calif.) closed out the match with a three-set win of his own at #5, his in rallying fashion, as he dropped the first set 7-6 (7-3) and then won the next two, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3).
 
The Mariners are back in action on Wednesday afternoon, April 12, when they host Skyline opponent Sarah Lawrence. First serve of doubles action is set for 4 p.m. at the Brooks Stadium Courts.
