PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 5, 2017) – The USMMA tennis team lost to Skyline Conference opponent Purchase College, 5-4, on Wednesday night up in Westchester County. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 4-3 (2-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Panthers improve to 4-1 (2-1 Skyline) with the victory.
The Mariners trailed 2-1 after doubles play ended. The lone victory came at #2, where senior Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) and junior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) triumphed, 8-5.
Purchase clinched the team victory with three-straight wins to open singles action. The Mariners finished strong, however, as senior James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) won at #1, 6-2, 7-5 (7-6), freshman Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) was victorious at #2, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 and Schwartz won his singles match-up at #4, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10).
Up next, Merchant Marine is slated to host Western Connecticut State on Thursday, April 6, at 4 p.m. at the Brooks Stadium Courts.
