KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 23, 2017) – The USMMA tennis team lost its non-conference matchup to visiting Drew University, 9-0, on Thursday afternoon at the Brooks Stadium courts. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 2-1 on the season, while the Rangers improve to 10-1 in triumph.
Drew quickly went ahead with an 8-0 shutout at #2 doubles. An 8-4 win for the Rangers at #3 made the match 2-0 in favor of the visitors. At #1 doubles, the Mariner duo of senior James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and sophomore Daniel Zakrevski (Forrest Hills, N.Y.) battled hard against Drew junior Salikh Gilmutdinov and sophomore Will Morrison, but lost in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-4).
In singles action, Drew clinched the team win with victories at #4 and #2. At #5, senior Geri Villan (Yonkers, N.Y.) won the first set, 6-3, before her opponent, sophomore Kevin Shulca, tied up the match with his own 6-3 win. The deciding third set went to a tiebreaker, and Shulca came out on top in the 10-point tiebreaker, 10-5.
The Mariners are back in action this Sunday, March 26, when they travel to Latham, N.Y., to take on Sage in the Skyline Conference opener. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Tri-City Tennis Facility.
