Mariners Open Spring Season With 9-0 Home Sweep Of Lehman

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 21, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team opened the Spring 2017 season with a 9-0 home victory over non-conference opponent Lehman College on Tuesday at the Brooks Stadium Courts. The win improves the Mariners' record to 2-0 on the season, while the Lightning open their year up with a 0-1 record.
 
USMMA swept the doubles action, with junior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) and freshman Daniel Kim (Porter Ranch, Calif.) starting the afternoon off with an 8-0 triumph at #3, followed by an 8-1 win at #2 by sophomore Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) and freshman Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.).
 
The first-flight matchup of senior James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and sophomore Daniel Zakrevski (Queens, N.Y.) against Lehman's freshman Michael Forte and sophomore Richard Williams was a great match with Hicks and Zakrevski coming out with a hard-fought 8-4 victory.
 
In singles action, the Mariners quickly clinched the team win with conquests at #5 and #1, as McGaffigan earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #5 and Hicks won the clincher, 6-0, 6-0, at #1. Senior Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) also triumphed in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at #4, followed by Deeter's 6-2, 7-5 win at #2.
 
Sophomore Madeline Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) opener her season with a 7-5, 6-0 win at #6 and the match concluded with an exciting three-set victory by Zakrevski at #2, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (17-15 in a third-set super tie-breaker).
 
The Mariners return to action on Thursday, March 23, when they host former Landmark Conference rival Drew University. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Brooks Stadium Courts.
