FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2016) – The USMMA tennis team played its first dual match of the 2016-17 season on Monday afternoon at Farmingdale State College. Despite conceding points at #3 doubles and #6 singles, the Mariners defeated the Rams by the final score of 6-3.
In doubles competition, freshmen Daniel Kim (Porter Ranch, Calif.) and Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) won at #2 by the score of 8-1 for the pair of plebes' first victories of their career. At #1, seniors James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) came out on top of Farmingdale's Dylan Murarka and Bradley Maslak, 8-4, to wrap up doubles play with Merchant Marine ahead in the match, 2-1.
McGaffigan was the first Mariner to finish singles play, as he defeated the Rams' Pat Madigan, 6-0, 6-2. Farmingdale won at #5 to bring the overall score in the match to 3-3.
However, back-to-back wins by Hicks at #1 (6-0, 6-0) and Kim at #4 (7-5, 6-3) clinched the match for USMMA. Kendall won his singles match at flight #2, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7 in the tiebreaker).
