Tennis Earns 7-2 Victory On The Road Saturday At Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. (April 30, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team closed out the 2016 regular season with a 7-2 road victory at Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon at the Crusaders' Varsity Tennis Courts. The win improves the Mariners' record to 7-5 (4-4 Landmark), while Susquehanna falls to 5-11 (0-7 Landmark) in defeat.

USMMA led 2-1 after doubles play, as the #1 flight of sophomore Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman Daniel Zakrevski (Queens, N.Y.) defeated Susquehanna's team of Ben Ornstein and Ryan Seibert, 8-2, and the Mariner duo of juniors Geri Villan (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) were victorious at #3, 9-7, over Alexander Dove and Ryan Van Valin.

In singles action, the Mariners dropped the first flight that ended at #4 to even the match up at 2-2, but won the next five for the 7-2 win. Kendall came out on top at #6, 6-2, 6-2, and McDonough won at #1, 6-3, 6-2. Villan sealed the victory with her 6-2, 6-0 straight-set victory at #5 and Zakrevski (6-2, 6-2 at #2) and senior Josh Levitas (Huntingtown, Md.) [7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9 in the third-set tiebreaker) at #3] finished off the match.
