Tennis Wins Home-Finale, 9-0, Over York (N.Y.) On Sunday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 24, 2016) – The USMMA tennis team hosted non-conference opponent York College (N.Y.) on Sunday afternoon at the Brooks Stadium Courts and defeated the Cardinals, 9-0, to improve its record to 6-5 on the season, while York falls to 0-11.

The Mariners swept the doubles competition with juniors Geri Villan (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) earning an 8-0 decision at #3, senior Josh Levitas (Huntingtown, Md.) and freshman Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) winning at #2, 8-0, and, finally, the #1 flight of sophomore Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman Daniel Zakrevski (Queens, N.Y.) triumphing 8-0, to put Merchant Marine ahead 3-0 in the match.

In singles play, freshman Madeline Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) at #5 and Levitas at #3 quickly took care of their opponents in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to clinch the match for USMMA. Deeter at #4 and fellow freshman Matt Hazelwood (Altavista, Va.) at #6 followed suit shortly after with their own straight-set wins by the scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively.

McDonough took care of his #1 matchup against Cardinal sophomore Felix Liew by the score of 6-0, 6-0, and Zakrevski closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win at #2.

Up next, the Mariners close out the regular season at Landmark Conference rival Susquehanna this Saturday, April 30, with a 1 p.m. start in Selinsgrove, Pa.
