KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 23, 2016) – The USMMA tennis team lost at home to Landmark Conference opponent Goucher on Saturday, 9-0. The loss drops the Mariners' record to an even 5-5 (3-4 Landmark) on the season, while the first-place Gophers improve to 16-4 (8-0 Landmark).
Prior to the match, the USMMA tennis program paid tribute to its lone graduating senior, Josh Levitas (Huntingtown, Md.), with a special Senior Day ceremony.
The Mariners came closest in doubles play at #3, where juniors Geri Villan (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) lost, 8-4. The Mariner teams at #1 and #2 both lost by the score of 8-3.
In singles competition, Kendall's match at #6 was most exciting, as it went three sets with the junior losing by the scores of 3-6, 6-4 and 10-7 in the 10-point, third-set tiebreaker. Sophomore Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) at #1 and Villan at #5 both battled hard as well, but fell by the scores of 6-2, 6-2, and 6-0, 6-4, respectively.
The Mariners will face non-conference opponent York College of New York tomorrow, Sunday, April 24. First serve of home-finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the courts at Brooks Stadium.
