MADISON, N.J. (April 20, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team defeated Landmark Conference opponent Drew University, 7-2, on the road on Wednesday afternoon at the Drew Tennis Complex. The win improves the Mariners' record to 5-4 (3-3 Landmark), while the Rangers fall to 6-9 (1-5 Landmark) in defeat.
USMMA swept doubles competition, as the duo of juniors Geri Villan (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) finished first at #3 with an 8-1 victory. Senior Josh Levitas (Huntingtown, Md.) and freshman Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) won at #3, 8-2, and sophomore Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman Daniel Zakrevski (Queens, N.Y.) completed the sweep by defeating their opponents at #1, 8-6.
Drew won the first singles match to finish at #3, but the Mariners clinched the match with back-to-back wins at #3 by Zakrevski (6-2, 6-4) and #6 by Kendall (6-2, 6-1). The Rangers' only other win came at #4, as the Mariners added victories at #5 and #1 by Villan [3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3)] and McDonough [6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8)], respectively.
The Mariners return to action with a pair of home matches this weekend. It all begins this Saturday, April 23, against Landmark Conference rival Goucher, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Brooks Stadium Courts.
