HUNTINGDON, Pa. (April 17, 2016) – The USMMA tennis team lost on the road to Landmark Conference opponent Juniata on Sunday, 9-0. The setback drops the Mariners' record to an even 4-4 (2-3 Landmark) on the season, while the Eagles improve to 10-7 (5-1 Landmark).
All three matches of the doubles competition were close, with the Merchant Marine team of senior Josh Levitas (Huntingtown, Md.) and freshman Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) coming the closest at #2, falling by the score of 9-7. At #1, sophomore Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman Daniel Zakrevski (Queens, N.Y.) lost 8-5, and the Mariner duo of juniors Geri Villan (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) fell at #3, 8-4.
In singles pay, McDonough's bout at #1 lasted the longest, as it went three sets with the sophomore losing by the scores of 2-6, 6-3 and 10-2 in the 10-point third-set tiebreaker. Levitas at #4 and Kendall at #6 both battled hard as well, but fell by the scores of 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2, 7-5, respectively.
Up next, the Mariners will face local Landmark foe Drew University this Wednesday, April 20. First serve of the league match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Rangers' Drew Tennis Complex on their campus in Madison, N.J.
