Tennis Falls At Scranton, 7-2, Saturday Afternoon

SCRANTON, Pa. (April 16, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team lost a Landmark conference road match-up at Scranton, 7-2. The loss drops the Mariners to 4-3 (2-1 Landmark), while the Royals improve to 4-8 (1-2 Landmark).

Scranton swept the doubles action to take a 3-0 lead early in the match. The Mariners got closest at #1, where sophomore Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman Daniel Zakrevski (Queens, N.Y.) fought hard, but came up short with an 8-4 loss.

In singles, the Mariners earned their first point of the day with a victory at #4, where senior Josh Levitas (Huntingtown, Md.) battled to a 6-2, 6-4 win. Merchant Marine closed out the match with a win at #1 with McDonough winning by the scores of 7-5, 6-2.

The Mariners return to action tomorrow Sunday, April 17, when they visit Landmark Conference rival Juniata in a 1 p.m. start at Raffensperger Tennis Courts.
