KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 30, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team hosted the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in its home-opener on Wednesday afternoon at the Brooks Stadium Courts. The Mariners defeated the Bloodhounds, 9-0, to improve to 2-1 on the season, while John Jay falls to 1-5.
USMMA swept the doubles competition with juniors Geri Villan (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) earning an 8-0 decision at #3, senior Josh Levitas (Huntingtown, Md.) and freshman Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) winning at #2, 8-1, and, finally, the #1 flight of sophomore Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman Daniel Zakrevski (Queens, N.Y.) triumphing 8-2, to put the Mariners ahead 3-0 in the match.
In singles play, Villan at #5 and Kendall at #6 quickly took care of their opponents in straight sets – 6-0, 6-0 – to clinch the match for Merchant Marine. Levitas and Zakrevski followed suit shortly after with their own straight-set wins by the same score at #4 and #3, respectively.
McDonough took care of his #1 matchup against Bloodhound senior Richard Mills by the score of 6-0, 6-1, and senior Alec De Ryckere (San Diego, Calif.) closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win at #2.
There were three exhibition matches during the meet. In doubles action, the team of freshmen Matt Hazelwood (Altavista, Va.) and Madeline Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) won, 8-0. In singles, freshman Michael Sobelman (Paramus, N.J.) and sophomore Katherine Mason (Knoxville, Tenn.) both earned 8-0 victories in a pro-set.
Up next, the Mariners open up Landmark Conference action this Saturday, April 2, when they host Catholic at 1 p.m. at the Brooks Stadium Courts.
