NEW LONDON, Conn. (March 24, 2016) – On Thursday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team lost a non-conference road match-up at arch-rival Coast Guard, 9-0. The loss drops the Mariners to 1-1 on the young season, while the Bears improve to 5-1.
Coast Guard won every flight in the match, sweeping the doubles, 8-2 at #1, 8-1 at #2 and 8-2 at #3.
In singles, the Mariners' got closest at #1 where, sophomore Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) battled to a 6-4, 6-4 defeat. At #3, freshman Daniel Zakrevski (Queens, N.Y.) lost by the scores of 6-3, 6-1.
The Mariners are back in action next Wednesday, March 30, when they host local non-conference foe John Jay in their home-opener at the Brooks Stadium Courts. Doubles competition is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
