BRONX, N.Y. (March 22, 2016) – The USMMA tennis team opened the 2016 season with a 9-0 road victory over non-conference opponent Lehman University on Tuesday.
In doubles, the team of sophomore Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman Daniel Zakrevski (Queens, N.Y.) won at #1, 8-6, while the pair of seniors Alec De Ryckere (San Diego, Calif.) and Josh Levitas (Huntingtown, Md.) won at #2, 8-1. Lastly, the duo of juniors Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) and Geri Villan (Yonkers, N.Y.) were victorious at #3 by the score of 8-0.
In singles play, McDonough, Villan and Kendall all earned straight-set victories (6-0, 6-0) at #1, #5 and #6, respectively. De Ryckere picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win at #2, while Levitas at #4 beat his opponent, 6-2, 6-0.
The closest match of the afternoon came at #3, where Zakrevski triumphed, 7-6 (8-6), and 10-4 in a 10-point pro-set, since the match was already clinched.
The Mariners are back in action this Thursday, March 24th, against their arch-rival Coast Guard. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in New London, Conn.
