Bronx, NY – The USMMA tennis team earned its first win of the 2014 season yesterday at Lehman, knocking off the Lightning, 7-1. The Mariners won all three of the doubles points as well as four-of-the five singles matches that were contested. Derek Acuna (Bainbridge Island, WA) won his fifth singles match 6-0, 6-0 and partnered with Ha-Young Rhee (Plano, TX) to earn an 8-2 decision at third doubles.
"I'm proud of the team's hard work and dedication throughout the preseason and into the regular season," said Co-Head Coach Trevor Banks. "I believe our overall fitness, pride, and having fun on the court is what led to our first win."
James Hicks (Haddon Heights, NJ) earned a 6-3, 6-3 triumph in straight sets at #1 singles while Karl Sasse (Frederick, MD) toppled Franelly Ortiz, 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles. Rhee picked up a victory in his first singles tilt of the season by knocking off Asrit Krasniqi at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-4. The match at third singles never started due to darkness.
Geri Villan (Yonkers, NY) and Hicks netted a decisive win at first doubles with an 8-1 final score while Christian Miller (El Paso, TX) and Sasse came out on top, 8-4, at second doubles. Hicks, Sasse, and Acuna all top the USMMA statistics sheet with a 2-1 record on the season.
"It's great to see the team rallying together as a unit and supporting each other," said Co-Head Coach Jimmy Robertson. "It was great teamwork that enabled us to get a victory and we will continue working hard to improve, which will hopefully lead to more wins in the future."
The USMMA tennis team returns to the court for a home match Thursday at 4:00 PM against York (NY).
