Mariners Drop 8-1 Decision to NYU-Poly

Flushing, NY – The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (1-1) were upended by the Fighting Blue Jays of NYU-Poly (1-0) by a score of 8-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.

Junior Steve Ficken notched the only win for USMMA as Merchant Marine was able to avoid the shutout.  The Mariners fell to NYU-Poly 9-0 a year ago in an early season matchup in Kings Point.

Sophomore Jeremy Guettlein and junior Bryan Diffley also put together solid efforts for Merchant Marine; hanging tough with the Blue Jays, dropping their matches 6-4, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-1 respectively.

All three doubles contests ended in identical 8-3 defeats for Kings Point. 

The Mariners will host their first home match of the season Saturday, March 16 at 1:00 PM against the Cardinals of Catholic University (7-3, 0-0 LC).
