Merchant Marine Picked Eighth in Preseason Poll

Kings Point, NY – The United States Merchant Marine academy tennis team was selected eighth by Landmark Conference coaches heading into the 2013 season.

Drew topped the poll, as they were selected to repeat as Landmark Conference Champions; winning every single conference championship to date.

In 2012, the Mariners had their best season since joining their Landmark Conference with a 5-9 overall record.  They also recorded their first ever Landmark victory in a 5-4 win over Goucher; as well as their best-ever conference finish, placing seventh.

Key returners from the 2012 squad include sophomore Moana Kawatachi (Santa Maria, CA) who won five singles matches in the number five slot for the Mariners a year ago and sophomore Jeremy Guettlein who won four singles matches in the number three position.

The team of Guettlein and senior Timothy Buxton (Seattle, WA) had the second highest doubles winning percentage for Merchant Marine in 2012, winning five of their 11 matches as a pair.

USMMA began their season with a fall match back in October, defeating Lehman College by an 8-1 margin.

The spring portion of their schedule begins March 13 at NYU Poly before returning home for their first match in Kings Point, against conference opponent Catholic on March 16 at 12:00 PM.
