Mariners Open Strong to Start Season, Defeat Lehman 8-1

The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners defeated the Lehman College Lightning 8-1 Wednesday afternoon in the Bronx, NY.

Newcomers to the tennis squad, Bryan Diffley and Josh Levitas, both earned wins in their first singles matches for the Mariners; scoring 10-3 and 10-0 respectively.   

Returners Moana Kawatachi, Derek Acuna, and Phillip Criswell III all earned singles victories as well, scoring 10-2, 10-0, and 11-9 respectively.

Timothy Buxton suffered the only loss for Kings Point facing Lehman's number one player.  He did, however, earn a doubles win (8-3) paired with Levitas.

The doubles teams of Kawatachi/Diffley and Criswell/Acuna also won, scoring 8-4 and 8-1 respectively.

Merchant Marine is coming of a 5-9 record in the 2012 spring season in which they recorded their first Landmark Conference victory in Academy history.

USMMA tennis will resume play in March of 2013 when the spring season begins.
