Tennis picks up first victory over York College
KINGS POINT, N.Y. – On Tuesday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team picked up their first victory of the year over non-conference foe York College by the score of 5-4.  With the victory USMMA improved to a 1-4 overall record.
Junior Jeff Gulitus (Cincinnati, Ohio) would help the Mariners pick up two huge victories in the match against York. The Cincinnati native teamed with senior Cesar Padilla to pick up a number one doubles victory over the duo of Ayman Busat and Jay June by the score of 8-1. Gulitus would later be victorious in his number one singles match against Busat by the scores of 6-1, 6-1
Freshman Richard Hine (Elkton, Md.) also picked up two victories for Kings Point, as well as the game-winning set to lead the tennis team to their first victory of the season. The Elkton native teamed with sophomore Biondi Phua (Singapore, Singapore) to defeat the duo of Erick Giron and Charlton Distin by the score of 8-3. Hine earned the game-winning set in his number five singles match against Justin Mo by the scores of 6-4, 6-1.
Phua also was a big part of the Mariners victory on Tuesday, picking up a number two singles victory over Jay June by the score of 6-2, 6-2.
