CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (March 2, 2019) – Three U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's divers traveled up to MIT this weekend to compete in the NCAA Region 3 Diving Championships with hopes to qualify for the upcoming NCAA DIII National Swimming & Diving Championship meet later this month.
Sophomore Gillem McMillan (Knoxville, Tenn.) ended the weekend's competition as an alternate for the seven divers that qualified for nationals from the region. On Friday night, McMillan came in eighth place in the three-meter competition. He followed that up with a ninth-place showing in the one-meter board on Saturday.
Should McMillan get selected to replace one of the divers from Region 3 at the National Championship Meet, an announcement will be made by the NCAA and USMMA Athletics.
Also competing this weekend were senior Thomas Curry (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Calvin Kim (Bellevue, Wash.). Curry came in 20th in the three-meter dive and 18th in the one-meter dive, while Kim placed 23rd in the three-meter and 22nd in the one-meter.
