Trio Of Mariners Sweep ECAC DIII Metro Swim & Dive Weekly Awards

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2018) – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced on Wednesday that three members of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team have swept the Division III Metro weekly awards for the week ending Jan. 7. Sophomore Nolan Monahan (Stafford, Va.) earned Swimmer of the Week honors, freshman Daniel Moore (Riverview, Fla.) was named the Rookie of the Week and classmate Gillem McMillan (Knoxville, Tenn.) earned his second Diver of the Week accolade of the year (Dec. 13). 

Monahan captured the Mariners' lone victory in a home dual meet against Division I Villanova University last Tuesday. He touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.13, just two-hundredths of a second ahead of Villanova's Tyler Nussbaum. The sophomore finished ahead of three DI swimmers in that race and ahead of two in the 200-yard individual medley, where he placed second with a time of 1:59.68. He was also the second leg of the Mariners' second-place 200-yard medley relay team that started off the meet with a time of 1:38.33. 

Moore recorded three second-place finishes against Villanova University. He finished ahead of Division I swimmers in both the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.68 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50:10. Moore also swam the first leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay for a time of 1:27.96. 

For the third time this season, McMillan earned an NCAA Qualifying Mark in the one-meter dive (11 dives) after he posted a combined score of 472.05 over the two one-meter dive events against Villanova.

The Mariners are back in action this evening, Jan. 10, when they host Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's of Brooklyn along with the women's team. First event is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the O'Hara Hall Pool.
