NEW LONDON, Conn. (Jan. 14, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team lost a very closely contested meet to arch-rival Coast Guard on Saturday by the final score of 159-139. The meet was not clinched until the second-to-last event, the 200 individual medley. With the loss, the Mariners fall to 5-2 on the season, while the Bears improve to 4-2.
Freshman Michael Moore (Los Alamos, N.M.) had a great day for USMMA. He won both the 1,000 freestyle (9:56.83) and 500 free (1:55.02) races, including a come-from-behind win in the 500, and he also anchored the 400 free relay squad to a victory in 3:13.06. All three of those times were season-bests.
Sophomore Christopher Kahl (Solomons, Md.) won the 100 and 200 backstrokes in season-best times, shaving off a half-second and three seconds, respectively. He touched first in the 100 back in 53.47, while winning the 200 back in 1:57.88.
Freshman Justin Fu (Libertyville, Ill.) was victorious in the 50 free in a season-best time by two-tenths of a second, 21.62. Classmate Caelin Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.) touched first in the 200 butterfly in a season-best time by 8 seconds, 1:56.85, and also placed second in the 100 fly, with a new season-best by 1.5 seconds, 1:56.85.
On the diving boards, junior Adam Fisher (Edgerton, Wis.) won the one-meter dive with a score of 280.80, officially qualifying himself for NCAAs. The mark was a season- and lifetime best for the junior. He also placed second in the three-meter dive competition. Fisher and the other four Mariner divers all had season-best scores on the day – senior Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.), sophomore Thomas Curry (Los Angeles, Calif.), junior Leighton-Joshua Flores (Marysville, Wash.) and sophomore Dave Argueta (Englewood, N.J.).
Other notable finishes included senior Kevin Sweetman (Austin, Texas) in the 1,000 free with a season-best by six seconds (10:05.55) and in the 500 free by three seconds (1:53.29), freshman Daniel Maxian (New Hope, Pa.) with a season-best by three seconds in 100 back (56.96) and seven seconds in the 200 back (2:04.64), senior John Terselic (Tijera, N.M.) with a season-best by two seconds in the in 100 breaststroke (59.76) and three seconds in the 200 breast (2:11.12) and freshman Maximilian Haubrich (Grayslake, Ill.) with a season-best 200 fly by 5 seconds (2:00.90).
Up next, Merchant Marine will host non-conference opponent NYU just coming Friday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m. at the O'Hara Hall Pool.
