VILLANOVA, Pa. (Jan. 3, 2017) – On Tuesday, the USMMA men's swimming team traveled to Villanova University for a dual meet against the Division I Wildcats. Each race was tight and closely contested, but the Mariners lost by the final score of 126-74, to fall to 4-1 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 2-4.
The Mariners claimed victories in two events over the meet. Senior Karl Sasse (Frederick, Md.) touched first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.30, while the 200 freestyle relay squad of freshmen Caelin Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.), Michael Moore (Los Alamos, N.M.), Justin Fu (Libertyville, Ill.) and Maximilian Haubrich (Grayslake, Ill.) closed out the day with a first-place finish in 1:30.03.
Three Mariners recorded two season-best times each at the meet. Senior Kevin Sweetman (Austin, Texas) had his in the two distance freestyle events, the 1000 free (10:11.47) and the 500 free (4:59.00), Moore's came in the 200 free (1:47.38) and the 500 free (4:52.76) and sophomore Christopher Kahl's (Solomons, Md.) times in the 200 individual medley (2:02.21) and the 100 backstroke (54.33) were season-bests.
USMMA returns to action next Tuesday, Jan. 10, when the Mariners play host to Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's (Long Island) at 6 p.m. at the O'Hara Hall Pool.
