KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2016) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy fourth-year diving coach Johan Lopez has been selected to serve on the USA Diving Senior Rules Subcommittee, the organization announced back on Saturday, Sept. 24.
At the election meeting held that Saturday, the general assembly selected a number of leaders and committees that will help shape the future of USA Diving. This included members of the Board of Directors, Finance Committees, Rules Committees, Governance Committees, etc.
Lopez was nominated by Leslie Hasselbach Adams, head diving coach at Clemson University, who sits on the NCAA Swimming & Diving Rules Committee, and with whom Lopez worked in partnership with while on his appointment to the NCAA DIII Swimming & Diving Committee. He was selected by the general assembly to represent Zone A (Northeast) on the rules committee.
The Rules Committee interprets technical diving rules and considers proposed amendments to the rules for recommendation to the Board of Governors. The Senior Subcommittee, in particular, deals with rules for athletes that are involved and compete for USA Diving at the International/Olympic level of the sport.
"I am proud of Coach Lopez for being selected for this committee," commented USMMA swim & dive head coach Sean Tedesco. "He is dedicated to the sport of diving and this committee will help shape the future of U.S. Diving for years to come."
"We are very proud our Johan's appointment to the USA Diving Senior Rules Subcommittee," added USMMA Athletic Director Mo White. "This will be a tremendous opportunity for him to work with his peers across the country to help shape the future of USA Diving. This is yet another accomplishment in what has been a great career for Johan here at Kings Point thus far."

Lopez has had tremendous success thus far in his three years as diving coach at USMMA. He has had multiple divers qualify for NCAAs each year, including both male and female divers each of the past two seasons. This past season, he coached two-time All-American Gerrit Porter '16 to a sixth place finish in the three-meter dive and an 11th place finish in the one-meter dive.
