Men’s Swim & Dive: Friday Landmark Championships Update – Mariners Atop Field After Day One

GERMANTOWN, Md. (Feb. 12, 2016) – The USMMA men's swimming & diving team sits in first place after day one of competition at the 2016 Landmark Conference Championships. The Mariners also crowned Conference Champions in two events, while a total of 17 Mariners made it through preliminaries to the finals.

Senior Gerritt Porter (Houston, Texas) took the conference title in the one-meter diving event with a finals score of 442.65. Earlier in the day during the afternoon prelims he scored a 447.45.

The 400 medley relay team of freshman Christopher Kahl (Solomons, Md.), junior Stone Hewitt (Destin, Fla.), senior William Kelsik (New Castle, Ind.) and freshman Matheus Macedo (Elk Grove, Calif.) captured the conference crown in the last event of the night with a time of 3:24.86.

Also making it through prelims to earn a spot in the A-Finals were juniors Kevin Sweetman (Austin, Texas) and John Terselic (Tijera, N.M.) in the 500 free, as Sweetman finished the finals in third in 4:45.36, while Terselic came in fifth in 4:46.57; Kahl, sophomore Josh Jepsen (San Diego, Calif.), senior Blair Roberts (South Jordan, Utah) and Hewitt in the 200 IM, as Kahl finished second (1:55.11), Jepsen was fourth (1:56.52), Roberts was sixth (1:58.67) and Hewitt was seventh (1:59.96); and Macedo and Kelsik in the 50 free, as Macedo came in fourth in 21.31 and Kelsik finished eighth in 21.81.

Sophomore diver Adam Fisher (Edgerton, Wisc.) finished second behind Porter with a score of 335.05, while freshman David Argueta (Garden Grove, Calif.) came in fifth with a 223.85.

Swimmers that made the B-Finals (ninth through 16th) were senior Case Kuikhoven (Ketchikan, Alaska) and freshman Nicholas Lambson (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 500 free, as Kuikhoven was ninth (4:51.90) and Lambson was 14th (4:55.85); sophomore Jordan Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.) and junior Robert Zagaja (Centerport, N.Y.) in the 200 IM, as Weaver finished ninth in 1:59.96 and Zagaja was 11th in 2:02.33; and junior Karl Sasse (Frederick, Md.) and sophomore Andrew Jackson (Chesapeake, Va.) in the 50 free, with Sasse coming in 10th (22.10) and Jackson 11th (22.14).

The Mariners are atop the standings through one day with 289 points. They sit well ahead of second place Catholic (199) and third place Susquehanna (194). Below are the complete USMMA men's results from Friday.

Action continues Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries for events 15-24. The finals for events 13-28 will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday night.
