KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2016) – It was Senior Day on Saturday for the men's swim & dive team and there was no better opponent to face than arch-rival Coast Guard. The Mariners won a tough-fought match, 158-142, to improve to 4-1 on the season. This is the third year in a row the men's team has defeated the Bears. USCGA falls to 5-2 in defeat.

Merchant Marine opened up the afternoon strong with a win in the 200-medley relay (1:36.30) with freshman Christopher Kahl (Solomons, Md.), junior Karl Sasse (Frederick, Md.), senior William Kelsik (New Castle, Ind.) and freshman Matheus Macedo (Elk Grove, Calif.) anchoring.

Senior Gerrit Porter (Houston, Texas) won both of his competitions in the one-meter and the three-meter competitions with scores of 298.35 and 333.75. The diving events were big contributions to the final outcome for Merchant Marine, as the Mariners grabbed 30 total points towards their score between the one- and three-meter events.

Kahl also went on to record two more first-place finishes on the afternoon in the 100-back (52:73) and the 200-back (1:56.90). Macedo notched two more victories as well, in the 50-free (21.90) and the 100-free (49.07). Kelsik added two more wins to his belt in the 200-fly (1:59.16) and the 100-fly (53.12).

Junior Stone Hewitt (Destin, Fla.) won in the 100-breast with a time of 58.76.

This was the final meet at the O'Hara Hall Pool for seniors Kelsik, Porter, Llorenc Aguiar (Garden Grove, Calif.), Case Kuikhoven (Ketchikan, Alaska), Blair Roberts (South Jordan, Utah), Alex Rodgers (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) and Keigan Thompson (Middletown, N.Y.). They were honored before the meet with a special Senior Day Ceremony.

The Mariners return to action Friday, Jan. 22, when they travel to Manhattan to take on NYU beginning at 5 p.m.
