KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team lost a non-conference home meet to nationally-ranked NYU on Friday night at the O'Hara Hall Pool. The Mariners fall to 4-2 overall in dual meets this season while the Violets improve to a perfect 8-0.
Senior Kevin Lindgren (Palm City, Fla.) picked up USMMA's only victory of the night in the 200 individual medley relay, finishing in 1:54.34. Sophomore diver Ryan Mavity (St. Joseph, Mich.) came in second place in the one-meter diving competition with an NCAA qualifying score of 292.05.
The Mariners also placed second in two other events and Lindgren was involved in both – the 100 backstroke, where he was edged by just four hundredths of a second with a time of 51.63 and as the leadoff member of the 200 medley relay team that also featured sophomore Karl Sasse (Frederick, Md.), junior William Kelsik (New Castle, Ind.) and sophomore Austin Butt (Westminster, Md.) that finished in 1:36.05.
USMMA returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 24, when the squad hosts Landmark Conference opponent Marywood University along with the women's team for a 1 p.m. meet at the O'Hara Hall Pool.
