Freshman Ryan Mavity (St. Joseph, MI) qualified for the NCAA Regional Meet with his performance on the 3-meter board against NYU. Overall, the Mariners posted a 2-1 record this week with victories over York and Old Westbury while suffering a setback to NYU. Kevin Lindgren (Palm City, FL) also had a strong outing versus NYU with wins in the 100 back, 200 back, and the 200 IM. During the week Kevin Sweetman (Austin, TX) and Case Kuikhoven (Ketchikan, AK) both earned Mariner of the Meet honors.
Freshman Stone Hewitt (Destin, FL) touched first in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, taking the latter by just .06 seconds. The Mariners also claimed the 400 freestyle relay as Alvaro Brice (The Woodlands, TX), Joshua McCormick (Granite Bay, CA), Tim Furman (Hokkaido, Japan), and Austin Butt (Westminster, MD) set a new season best time of 3:15.65.
Sweetman shattered his previous season bests to win both the 500 and 1000 freestyle events against the Violets. Kuikhoven also established new personal season marks in both events. Other USMMA swimmers who swam well en route to new season best times included Robert Zagaja (Centerport, NY), Andrew Terselic (Tijera, NM), John Terselic (Tijera, NM), William Kelsik (New Castle, IN), and Bryce Kramer (Boerne, TX).
The USMMA men's swimming and diving team returns to the pool in two weeks in defense of its Landmark Conference Championships. To date, Merchant Marine is the only team to ever win a Landmark Conference men's swimming championship.
