Mariners men win again, stay undefeated in swimming

KINGS POINT, N.Y. –  The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming remained undefeated this season, recording a 110-74 win over Lehman College at O'Hara Hall on Tuesday night.

The Mariners (3-0) won 10 events in the competition as they won for the second time in as many days. They defeated Queens College at home on Monday night.

The Merchant Marines were led by John Fields, Frank Vita and Sean Higgins, who registered two victories apiece.

Vita started things off with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning in a time of 10:20.31. He added another triumph in the 100 freestyle, swimming to victory in 48.63.

Fields captured the 200 freestyle in 1:48.21 and the 500 freestyle in 5:06.30.

Higgins won both diving competitions. He earned first place in the one-meter event with 178.95 points and accrued 202.65 points to win the three-meter event.

Among the other highlights of the meet:

Sean Minor captured the 50 freestyle in 22.60.

Kevin Lindgren took first in the 200 individual medley in 2:01.58.

Erik Blanchard won the 100 butterfly in 55.77.

And Jacob Harding finished first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.47.

The Mariners won't be swimming in an actual competition until after the Christmas break when they compete at Scranton University on Jan. 7. However, they certainly will keep in shape as they will train in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. from Dec. 26-Jan. 3.
