Mariners men take Manhattan in swimming, 113-92

MANHATTAN – Freshman Kevin Lindgren and senior John Fields each won two events to key the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to a 113-92 men's non-conference swimming win over Manhattan College on Saturday.

Manhattan is an NCAA Division I school, while the USMMA competes at the Division III level.

Lindgren captured the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.94 and also won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.44.

Fields took first place in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.25 and finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.90.

Freshman Aloysius Vita also won the 100-yard butterfly as he was clocked in 53.26 seconds. The Mariners (1-0) also earned first place in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:38.46.

Two Merchant Marine freshmen showed improvement in the meet.

Ben Gabbard sliced three seconds off his season's best time in the 200 IM as he finished second in 2:09.62.

Hunter Rowan dropped a second off his season's best in the 100 butterfly as he also took second with a 54.81 finish.

The Mariners host Queens College Monday at 6 p.m. and Lehman College Tuesday at 6 p.m.
