Trevor Banks is in his third year as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy soccer team.

Banks specializes in defensive training. With Banks’ help in 2014, the Mariners’ defense posted a goals against average of 0.87 while also generating eight shutouts on the season. Banks helped lead the team to a 10-7-3 (6-2 Conference) record and an appearance in the Landmark Conference Championship match. Banks also helped coach Gavin Yingling, Kyle Arestivo, Dan Weldon and Erik Kempinski to Landmark All-Conference First Team with Yingling being named Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

In 2013, Banks mentored goalkeeper Gary Poulin to an All-Landmark Conference First Team selection, Landmark Senior Scholar Athlete selection and an NSCAA All-Region Scholar Athlete selection. Banks help lead the Mariners to a 7-8 (4-3 Conference) record and an appearance in the Landmark Conference semifinals. Along with Poulin, Banks also helped coach Dan Weldon to the All-Landmark Conference First Team selection and Kyle Arestivo to a Second Team All-Landmark selection.

2012 was Banks’ first year on the staff for the Mariners under head coach Michael Smolens. That year, he developed first-year goalkeeper Stephen Fucito and helped coach the Mariners to a 7-8 (3-4 Conference) record. He also helped coach Kurt Olsen to his third consecutive All-Landmark Conference First Team selection.

Banks came to USMMA after spending the 2011 campaign as the assistant soccer coach on Steve McCrath’s staff at Barry University in Miami, Fla., and the prior two years as the assistant coach/recruiting coordinator on Nathan Mason’s staff at William Woods University in Fulton, Mo.

In 2011, while at Barry University, the defensive core posted a GAA of 0.90. During this time, Banks mentored goalkeeper Johnny Rodrigues, who was named to the All-Sunshine State Conference First Team, Daktronics All-South Region First Team and a Daktronics Honorable Mention All-American. Banks helped coach Barry’s 2011 squad to a record of 12-3-6 (3-2-3 Conference) and ranked 13th in NSCAA NCAA Division II.

At William Woods, Banks was a part of helping to turn the program around. In the 2009 season, he worked closely with goalkeeper Robert Thibodeaux, who posted a single-season record setting GAA of 0.76 while also being named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention list. In the 2010 season, Banks was a part of a program at William Woods that found itself in its first appearance in the conference semifinals, losing to eventual champions Park University.

In addition to his collegiate coaching duties, Banks has also worked with numerous youth soccer clubs around the nation such as Omaha Futbol Club, Owensboro United, Daviess County Youth, Columba Soccer Club, Capital Soccer Club, Miami Shores FC, Weston FC and most recently Long Island Rough Rider.

Banks has served as the assistant men’s coach with the Long Island Rough Riders of the United Soccer League since the spring of 2012. With the Rough Riders, Banks is in charge of training and preparing the defensive core, match evaluation and video analysis and developing strategies and tactics to be carried out during the matches.

Banks earned a master’s degree in athletic administration from William Woods University in 2010 and a bachelor’s degree in communication arts from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 2009. Banks also played three seasons at Kentucky Wesleyan from 2006-2009 and five seasons in the United Soccer League from 2004-2009. He has earned NSCAA National, Regional, and State Goalkeeper Diplomas and owns a USSF “B” License.
