KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2018) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy junior goalkeeper Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) was selected by the Skyline Conference men's soccer head coaches as the league's Defensive Player of the Year, the conference announced on Monday with the release of the postseason awards. Milner also joins two other Mariners on the First Team All-Skyline – sophomore midfielder Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.) and senior defender Sam Ney (Vicenza, Italy) – while senior midfielder Joe Springer (Bowie, Md.) landed on the Second Team.
Milner recorded a Skyline-best 0.644 goals against average throughout the season, a mark that currently ranks 36th in the country. He is also tied for second in the Skyline with seven solo shutouts and ranks fifth in the league with a .793 save percentage. He was named to the Skyline Weekly Honor Roll back on Sept. 24 after he shut out the #22/21 team in the nation, Stevens, in a 0-0 draw on Sept. 18.
Lysakowski was the Mariners' leading scorer on the season with 20 points on nine goals and two assists. He ranks seventh in the Skyline with 1.05 points per game and is tied for fifth with nine goals. The sophomore also scored five game-winning goals this season, which is tied for second in the conference and 18th in the nation. Lysakowski was selected as the Skyline Rookie of the Week twice throughout the season (Sept. 4 & Sept. 17).
Ney was a crucial part of the Mariner defense, who contributed to a total of nine shutouts on the season. Thanks to his efforts, the Mariners allowed the least amount of goals against on the season among all Skyline teams (just 14). The quick outside defender also contributed to the USMMA offense with three goals on the season and his two-goal effort against St. Joseph's-L.I. in the Skyline Tourney First Round on Oct. 28 earned him Skyline Player of the Week honors.
Springer was a huge mainstay in the center-midfield position for Merchant Marine this year. He dropped back and played great defense when asked and also lent a hand offensively often for the Mariners – as he also scored three goals on the season. He was selected to the Skyline Men's Soccer Weekly Honor Roll back on Oct. 1 after a two-goal effort in a road conference win at St. Joseph's-L.I. on Sept. 29.
