NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2018) – The USMMA men's soccer season came to an end on Saturday afternoon in the Finals of the 2018 Skyline Championships. The #3 seed Mariners lost to top-seeded Mount St. Mary, 2-0. In defeat, Merchant Marine ends the year with a 12-5-2 overall record, while the Knights, who have now won back-to-back Skyline titles, improve to 14-5-1 and will move on to play in the NCAA Tournament.

In a tightly contested first half that featured six combined shots, the Knights broke through with just under 10 seconds left before the intermission with the eventual deciding goal. Freshman Matthew Wyant started a free kick on the left wing that found the back of the net at the 44:52 mark of the contest to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage that they took into halftime.

Shots in the opening period were even at 3-3, with junior Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) making one save. His counterpart for MSMC, sophomore Tyler Rapp, also had one stop on a great chance off a free kick by senior Michael Mischler (Monroe Township, N.J.). Merchant Marine rounded out the opening 45 minutes with four of the six corner kicks awarded.

Freshman David Kelly (Lutherville, Md.) had a great chance early in the second half, but Rapp made another big save to maintain the lead for Mount St. Mary.

The Knights maintained that lead until the 59th minute, when Wyant struck with his second of the game to put MSMC in front by two goals. He played a loose ball in the box into the back of the net at the 58:48 mark to close out the scoring in the game.

The Mariners finished the second half with a 5-1 edge in shots, but could not break through. Milner had that first-half save to his record, while Rapp ended the day with three saves.

USMMA outshot Mount St. Mary, 8-4, on the day, while shots on goal in the contest were even at 3-3. The Mariners dominated corner kicks on the day 7-2.
