KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2018) – The last two teams to win Skyline Conference Championships will meet on the pitch on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 3, up at Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y., with a chance to claim another league title and earn the Skyline's automatic berth into the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
Kickoff of the Skyline Championship Finals between the 2016 champions, the #3 seed U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Mariners, and the reigning 2017 champions, the #1 seed Mount St. Mary Knights, is scheduled for 1 p.m. at MSMC's Kaplan Field.
Scouting Mount St. Mary
The Knights enter Saturday's final at 13-5-1 and are winners of their last four outings, including a 3-0 shutout of Old Westbury in the conference semifinals on Wednesday night. They are outscoring their opponents, 13-3, over that four-game span.
Freshman Connor Doyle leads the team in goals with eight and was voted the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week on October 15.
Classmate Matthew Wyant is the team leader in points with 22, following a goal in Wednesday's semifinal, and is tied with senior Connor Lynch, who also scored on Wednesday, for second on the team in goals with seven.
Entering Saturday's contest, Wyant is tied for the conference lead in assists with eight and is fourth in the league in points.
In goal, sophomore Tyler Rapp has posted eight wins and four shutouts, including a 3-0 shutout on Wednesday, entering the weekend with a .707 save percentage and a 1.34 goals against average.
The Knights blanked Old Westbury on Wednesday night to reach the Skyline Finals. Wyant scored on a free kick, as the eventual game-winner, and Lynch scored off a free kick as well. Freshman Anthony Guglielmo scored a late marker in the 52nd minute. Rapp made six saves to earn the shutout.
A Closer Look At The Mariners
Merchant Marine is 12-4-2 on the season following a road 2-1 semifinal win over Maritime on Wednesday.
Sophomore Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.), a two-time Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week, leads the scoring attack with nine goals for the year, including the game-winner over Maritime, and 20 points to lead the team. Junior Alex Madonna (Gibsonia, Pa.) scored his fifth goal of the season against Maritime, good for second on the team. The Mariners also have six players with three goals for the season.
Lysakowski is tied for fifth in the conference in goals, tied for sixth in points, and tied for the conference lead in game-winning goals with five.
Junior keeper Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) has started all 18 games in goal for the Mariners. He has posted a .818 save percentage, a 0.57 goals against average and has made 45 saves on the season. He has seven clean sheets for Merchant Marine.
Milner leads the conference in goals against average, leads in save percentage, and is tied for second in shutouts.
Looking Back To The Regular Season Matchup
Mount St. Mary defeated USMMA, 3-1, back on Oct. 16 in Kings Point.
Wyant led the attack with four points on the night, scoring on a penalty kick to make the deficit 3-0. Lynch got the scoring going for the Knights late in the first half. Doyle picked up three points in the game, scoring in the 63rd minute. Rapp made four saves for the Mount.
Madonna scored for USMMA in the 77th minute to cut the deficit to 3-1 late.
