KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2018) – The #3-seed U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team shut out visiting #6-seed St. Joseph's-L.I., 4-0, on Sunday at Brooks Stadium in the First Round Matchup of the 2018 Skyline Championship. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 11-4-2 on the season and advance to the Skyline semifinals, while the Golden Eagles end their season with an 8-9-1 record.

The Mariners held a 7-3 advantage in shots over the opening 40 minutes before freshman Liam Cashmore (Silverdale, Wash.) found the back of the net in the 42nd minute. Not even four minutes after the plebe subbed in he found himself streaking down the middle towards a wide-open goal and receiving a pass from fellow freshman Abram Ehrhorn (Papillion, Neb.) from the left side before blasting it home. Junior Austin Flores (Wichita, Kan.) also picked up an assist on the tally, as he led Ehrhorn up the left side on a break. USMMA took that 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, it was the "Sam Ney Show," as the senior from Vicenza, Italy, tallied two goals that were absolute rockets from outside the box to increase the Mariner lead to 3-0.

The first came in the 52nd minute after freshman David Kelly (Lutherville, Md.) took a corner kick that the St. Joe's defense kicked out, Ney one-timed the ball right into the top right corner from about 30 yards.

Ney's second tally came with exactly 30 minutes remaining in the game. Again it was a blast from past the box on the right side that beat out the stretch of the Golden Eagles' sophomore keeper Tyler Flaherty and snuck into the left side of the net.

Sophomore Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.) rounded out the scoring in the 72nd minute when he took advantage of a misplay by a St. Joseph's defender who fell down while trying to corral the ball. Lysakowski had a one-on-one with the keeper and beat him low to the right.

Junior keeper Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) finished with a clean sheet after making four saves, three in the second half. It was his seventh solo shutout of the season. Flaherty ended the day with four saves as well for SJC.

The Mariners held a 16-8 advantage in total shots throughout the 90 minutes.

Merchant Marine now advances to the semifinals, where the Mariners will face rival and #2-seed SUNY Maritime this Wednesday, Oct. 31, at their campus in the Throggs Neck section of The Bronx. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Privateers' Reinhart Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page
