KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2018) – The USMMA men's soccer team lost its home Skyline Conference matchup against Mount St. Mary, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Brooks Stadium. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 9-4-2 (5-3-1 Skyline), while the Knights improve to 10-5-1 (6-1-1) with the victory.
MSMC opened the scoring late in the opening half off of a free-kick from just over 30 yards out that found its way right to senior Connor Lynch who was in position right in the middle of the goal area to bury a shot high into the net. Freshmen Connor Doyle and Matthew Wyant picked up assists on that tally.
The Knights doubled their lead in the 63rd minute when Doyle sprinted up to a great lead pass from Wyant through the Mariner defense and fired a shot low that beat Merchant Marine junior keeper Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.).
In the 76th minute, USMMA was called for a foul in the box and Mount St. Mary was awarded a penalty kick. Wyant was called on to take it for the Knights and he converted with a bullet to the low right 90.
Just 1:10 later, the Mariners got on the board after junior Austin Flores (Wichita, Kan.) gathered a cross from the near side just inside the 18-yard box and found freshman Cole Blake (Parker, Colo.) on the right wing. Blake fired a shot that was blocked by the defense, but went right to junior Alex Madonna (Gibsonia, Pa.), who ripped a shot low to make it a 3-1 game with just over 13 minutes to play. Blake had the primary assist on the tally, while Flores got the secondary helper.
The Mariners tried frantically in the final 10-plus minutes to muster up the two goals needed to tie the score, as they fired off the final four shots of the game, however they were unable to find the back of the net again and MSMC claimed the victory.
Milner ended the night with one save, while his counterpart for Mount St. Mary, sophomore Tyler Rapp, made four saves for the win.
Up next, Merchant Marine closes out the regular season with a road match against Yeshiva University this Sunday, Oct. 21. The game will be played at Votee Park in Teaneck, N.J. and will begin at 8:30 p.m. Live stats for the contest will be available at this link.
