KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov 7, 2016) – The USMMA men's soccer team will be travelling down to Haverford, Pa., this weekend for the opening rounds of 2016 NCAA Tournament at Haverford College. The Mariners will be taking on the host Fords in first round action this Saturday, Nov. 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Haverford's Walton Field.

Merchant Marine (13-4-2, 10-1 Skyline) earned the Skyline Conference's automatic bid into the national tournament after capturing the Skyline Championship this past Saturday. The Mariners earned the #1 seed in the league tourney and defeated #4 Farmingdale State, 3-2, in the semifinals and #6 Sage, 1-0 in overtime, in the championship game. This is USMMA's sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament under 27th-year head coach Michael Smolens, and first since 2011.

Haverford (13-3-3, 8-1 Centennial) won the Centennial Conference Championship this weekend, earning the conference's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Fords, who ranked #17 in the nation in the latest NSCAA Coaches Poll back on Nov. 1, are hosting the first and second rounds of the tourney for the second straight year. Haverford finished atop the Centennial standings after the regular season and defeated #4 seed Washington College, 2-1 in overtime, in the semifinals, before beating #2 seed and the eighth-ranked team in the nation, Franklin & Marshall, 2-1, this past Sunday to earn the conference title.

"The team has worked very hard this year and we are proud to have reached our preseason goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament," commented Smolens. "We know every game will be tough and our guys are looking forward to the challenge which lies ahead."

In other first round action this Saturday at Haverford, Little East Conference Champs #15 UMass-Boston (17-1-2, 5-1-1 LEC) will be taking on Kean University (14-5-1) out of the NJAC, who earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
