FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team defeated Skyline Conference opponent Farmingdale State on the road on Saturday, 4-1, at FSC's Rams Field. The Mariners' fifth straight win improves their record to 9-4-2 (8-1 Skyline) and with 24 points in conference play, USMMA has clinched a playoff berth in the Skyline Tournament. Farmingdale falls to 7-6 (6-2 Skyline) with the loss.

For the second game in a row, senior Gavin Yingling (Salisbury, Md.) scored a pair of goals for the Mariners, while junior Jon Tarbox (Gettysburg, Pa.) also found the back of the net. Freshman Matt McCurnin (Newark, Del.) tallied his first career goal as well in the victory.

In net, senior Cory Maier (Hampton, Va.) earned the victory as he played over 68 minutes and made one save. He was replaced by junior Nolan Smith (Stafford, Va.) for the final 22-plus minutes and Smith did not face one shot on goal.

Tarbox opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the year in the 13th minute. He finished off a cross by junior Alex Niemann (Valatie, N.Y.), who picked up his second assist of the season.

The Rams answered back just over five minutes later, however, as sophomore Christian Campos beat Maier from 10 yards out to tie the game.

The Mariners outshot Farmingdale, 13-5, in the opening 45 minutes, and forced FSC sophomore keeper Lucas Mallia to make five saves.

USMMA went straight to the attack early in the second half with back-to-back-to-back goals on the second, third and fourth shots of the first nine-plus minutes. Yingling got his first marker of the day off an assist by freshman Austin Flores (Wichita, Kan.) in the 50th minute. Just 51 second later, McCurnin beat Mallia on a header off of a cross by Flores (his second helper of the day). Then, Yingling gave the Mariners a three-goal lead in the 55th minute when he intercepted a pass and blasted a shot in from 20-yards out.

Farmingdale responded with the next three shots, but two went wide and the other was blocked. The Mariners finished the final 21-plus minutes with the last three shots of the game – one wide and the other two saved by Mallia.

"We were pleased the way we stepped up in the seond half to pressure Farmingdale and take over the match," said Head Coach Michael Smolens. "We got a big lift from Matt McCurnin who helped pressure their backs and scored a terrific goal off an Austin Flores cross. We need to keep working hard as we close the regular season with two key conference matched coming up."

This Tuesday night, Oct. 18, the Mariners will travel up to Albany to take on Sage in a Skyline Conference contest beginning at 7 p.m. at the Albany College of Pharmacy Athletic Complex. Live stats and a live video feed of the game are available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
