KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team defeated Skyline Conference rival the College of Mount St. Vincent, 4-1, at home on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium. The victory, the Mariners' fourth straight, moves their record to 8-4-2 (7-1 Skyline), while the visiting Dolphins fall to 5-8-1 (4-3 Skyline).

Senior Gavin Yingling (Salisbury, Md.) scored twice to lead the USMMA offense. Junior Jon Tarbox (Gettysburg, Pa.) assisted on Yingling's first goal and also had a tally himself (which Yingling set up). Sophomore Neil Painter (New Cumberland, Pa.) opened the scoring for the Mariners with his second goal of the season, which came in the third minute on a header off of a corner kick by senior David Burkhardt (Cutchogue, N.Y.).

Yingling scored just 20 seconds later after he buried a rebound of a shot by Tarbox to quickly put the Mariners ahead 2-0 just over three minutes into action.

The Dolphins responded quickly, however, as junior Jair Magallan scored in the 13th minute after a strong individual effort.

Tarbox's marker came in the 26th minute and proved to be the final goal of an eventful first half. Yingling's second goal was off of a long free kick in the 51st minute.

In goal, senior Cory Maier (Hampton, Va.) earned the victory in over 79 minutes of action. He was replaced by junior Nolan Smith (Stafford, Va.) for the final 10-plus minutes.

For Mount St. Vincent, senior David Melchor started in goal and made four saves in the first half. Freshman Padelis Astrinidis replaced Melchor for the second half and made one save.

"Coach Fitzgerald, Coach Cochrane and I are proud of the way we played today," commented head coach Michael Smolens. "We came out strong, put pressure on our opponent, finished some chances in the first half and displayed solid defense all the way through. We are playing well and need to keep this up as we come up on some very important conference matches.

The Mariners hit the road this weekend, as they'll travel to Farmingdale State on Saturday, Oct. 15, for a key Skyline matchup against the Rams. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live stats are available for the match and can be accessed by following this link.
