Box Score

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2016) – Senior David Burkhardt (Cutchogue, N.Y.) tallied his first goal of the season just 40 seconds into the Merchant Marine soccer team's game against Sarah Lawrence today, and the Mariners never looked back, as they cruised to a 7-0 victory over the Gryphons. The victory improved USMMA's record to 6-4-2 (6-1 Skyline), while SLC falls to 3-7 (0-6 Skyline) in defeat.

Burkhardt's goal was assisted by junior Hannes Rogers (Weinheim, Germany).

Six different players found the back of the net for the Mariners, with Rogers leading the way with two tallies. Junior Jon Tarbox (Gettysburg, Pa.) picked up an assist on Rogers' ninth-minute goal and classmate Brandon-Rey Jumaoas (Portsmouth, R.I.) had a helper on his 26th-minute tally.

Sophomore Neil Painter (New Cumberland, Pa.) scored the first goal of his career in the 29th minute to put the Mariners up 4-0. Burkhardt had a hand in that goal and also up the primary assist on the next goal, scored by senior Gavin Yingling (Salisbury, Md.) in the 35th minute. Sophomore Michael Montesclaros (Evans, Ga.) picked up the secondary assist on Yingling's ninth tally of the season.

The last two goals of the game came off the feet of freshmen Sam McGill (Canton, Ohio) and Alex Madonna (Gibsonia, Pa.). Freshman Matt McCurnin (Newark, Del.) assisted on McGill's first career marker and McGill set up Madonna's third goal of the season.

In goal, senior Cory Maier (Hampton, Va.), junior Nolan Smith (Stafford, Va.) and freshman Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) combined for the shutout. Maier made three saves in the first half, Smith made one save in over 25 minutes and Milner didn't face a shot in the final 19-plus.

"We were pleased with the way we came out and put the match away, and how we finished a number of goals early on," said head coach Michael Smolens. "We have a stern test tomorrow against a powerful Rutgers-Camden team before heading back to a very important conference match on Wednesday."

Tomorrow's match at Rutgers-Camden is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the Scarlet Raiders' Commercial Park. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
