PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team lost to Skyline Conference rival St. Joseph's of Long Island, 1-0, on Saturday out at the Golden Eagles' Danzi Stadium. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 4-4-2 (4-1 Skyline) on the season, while SJC improves to 3-7 (3-2 Skyline).
The Mariners handily outshot the Eagles, 10-2, in the opening 45 minutes, including a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal, but senior Avery Gomez kept Merchant Marine off the scoreboard with four saves.
St. Joe's senior Brian O'Sullivan tallied the only marker of the game and it came just 1:49 into the second half of action when he blasted a shot past senior Cory Maier (Hampton, Va.) from 30 yards out.
USMMA fought hard in the second half to tie the score up, rattling off a total of 12 shots (five on goal), but Gomez finished with the clean sheet after making nine saves on the afternoon. For the Mariners, senior Gavin Yingling (Salisbury, Md.) had a game-high eight shots (with four on goal) and Maier made three saves in the losing effort.
"Coach Fitzgerald, Coach Cochrane and I are certainly disappointed with our play today, and we need to learn from it and bounce back next week," commented head coach Michael Smolens. "When we didn't convert after controlling so much of the play in the first half, we let St. Joseph's off the hook and they took advantage of it with a terrific goal and the victory. We look forward to getting right back at it on Tuesday with another conference match and we will look to put this result behind us."
This Tuesday, Oct. 4, the Mariners will take on Purchase in a Skyline Conference match up in Westchester County. Action is set to get underway at 7 p.m. Live stats for the game can be found by following this link.
