KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 7, 2016) – The USMMA men's soccer team lost its home-opener to visiting Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday night by the final score of 5-1. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 0-2-1, while the Scarlet Raiders improve to 3-1.
Junior Brandon-Rey Jumaoas (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored the first goal of the game for Merchant Marine in the third minute when he tapped in a long cross from classmate Alex Niemann (Valatie, N.Y.) at the post. Junior Jon Tarbox (Gettysburg, Pa.) was credited with a secondary assist on the tally, his second helper of the season.
Rutgers-Newark struck back just over 20 minutes later to tie the score and then 11 minutes after that took a 2-1 lead, which the Scarlet Raiders held onto into the halftime break.
In the second half, Rutgers-Newark kept pressing forward, as they expanded their lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute before back-to-back goals late by sophomore Stefano Muniz put the game well out of reach.
Scarlet Raider freshman keeper Andres Medina made eight saves on the night in the winning effort, while USMMA senior Cory Maier (Hampton, Va.) had two stops. Junior Nolan Smith (Stafford, Va.) played the final six minutes and had one save for the Mariners.
USMMA is back in action this Saturday, Sept. 10, when they travel up to New London, Conn. to take on arch-rival Coast Guard in their annual Superintendents' Trophy contest. Live stats are available for the game and can be accessed by following this link.
