Men’s Soccer Named NSCAA 2015-16 Team Academic Award Winner

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2016) – On Thursday, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced their Academic Award Winners for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2015-16 academic year. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is among the men's teams from across all three divisions of the NCAA throughout the country that are receiving the award from the NSCAA.

To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA, then dividing by the number of players.

"We are very proud of our players here and how hard they work in all aspects of life at the Merchant Marine Academy," commented head coach Michael Smolens. "Balancing their academic, regimental and soccer responsibilities takes a great deal of effort and strong time management skills, and doing this helps prepare our Midshipmen to succeed following graduation. Coach Fitzgerald, Coach Cochrane and I are pleased that our players have been recognized with this honor and understand that this is a sign of the groundwork these young men have put in which will lead them to accomplish great things in the future."
