USMMA Men's Soccer opened the 2014 season with a 3-0 win against the College of Staten Island at the College of Staten Island Soccer Classic.
The Mariners put pressure on the Dolphins from the opening kickoff, and jumped to a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the contest. Nick Vogel dribbled past two defenders with the dexterity of a lizard and slotted the ball into the corner of the net past the onrushing CSI goalkeeper. The Mariners doubled their advantage midway through the first half when Gavin Yingling received a Tim Hughes pass and calmly slid the ball past the Dolphin goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead. Kings Point continued to press the attack, but were unable to find the net again by halftime.
The second half saw much of the same pattern of play, with USMMA continuing to attack. At the 61 minute mark, co-captain Kyle Arestivo's long range blast found the upper corner for a 3-0 Mariner advantage. Though they continued to pressure the Dolphin defense, creating many more opportunities, the score remained 3-0. Goalkeeper Cory Maier, in his first career start, led the Mariner defense with the shutout.
"Coach Fitzgerald, Coach Banks, and I are happy with the good start" said USMMA Head Coach Michael Smolens. "Our effort throughout the preseason has been strong and we are pleased that it has carried into our first match".
The Mariners look to take the tournament title as they face New Jersey City University on Sunday August 31 at noon on the College of Staten Island campus.
