Merchant Marine Shuts Out Maritime (NY), 2-0

Throggs Neck, NY – The USMMA men's soccer team turned in a second straight shutout Wednesday night with a 2-0 victory on the road against Maritime (NY).  Gary Poulin (Hauppauge, NY) made four saves to preserve the clean sheet as the Mariners won their first road game of the 2013 season.  Kyle Arestivo (Northport, NY) registered one goal and one assist while Alex Palermo-Re (Manassas, VA) posted the second USMMA marker.

"We played our best match of the year tonight, as we controlled the ball for much of the game," said Head Coach Michael Smolens.  "We created a number of chances, and were disappointed when the posts or some missed opportunities kept us from scoring more goals.  We feel good about how we played and hope we continue to show improvement."

Merchant Marine (2-3-0) tallied the breakthrough 15:20 into the opening half on Arestivo's first goal of the year.  Dan Weldon (Holland Township, NJ) provided the assist on the play as Arestivo drilled the top-left corner of the net.  USMMA controlled the majority of the action and finished the game with a 23-10 edge on shots over the Privateers.

Maritime (NY) (1-3-0) got six saves from goaltender Karl Weber but would be unable to penetrate the Mariners' defense.  Palermo-Re pushed the USMMA advantage to 2-0 with a goal in the 51st minute.  The senior finished a cross directly in front of the Maritime net as Arestivo and Gavin Yingling (Salisbury, MD) earned assists on the goal.

The USMMA soccer team will look to win a third straight game Saturday at 11:00 am as they host arch rival Coast Guard at Brooks Stadium.
