Overtime Heartbreaker Sends Mariners to 3-2 Defeat at Rutgers-Newark

Newark, NJ - Raphael Araujo scored a golden goal for Rutgers-Newark as the horn for the end of the first overtime sounded, sending the Merchant Marine soccer team to a 3-2 setback Wednesday night.  Nick Vogel (Mechanicsburg, PA) and Gavin Yingling (Salisbury, MD) each found the back of the net for the Mariners.  Gary Poulin (Hauppauge, NY) made 12 saves in net for the Mariners as the Scarlet Raiders totaled 28 shots.

Merchant Marine (0-3-0) cracked the scoreboard with Vogel's marker 6:57 into the game.  The junior keeper beat the Scarlet Raiders net minder near post to put the Mariners on top, 1-0.  That advantage would hold through the first period as USMMA held a one-goal cushion at the intermission.

Rutgers-Newark (2-1-0) went up 2-1 as Araujo netted the first two goals of his hat trick in the second half.  Yingling scored his first collegiate goal with 14:11 remaining in regulation to knot the score at 2-2.  Kyle Arestivo (Northport, NY) picked up the assist on the game-tying goal.

Arajuo completed a break away in the final moments of the extra session, depositing the game winner for the Scarlet Raiders with no time left on the clock.

The USMMA soccer team will look for its first win of the season Saturday against York (NY) at 11:00 am at Brooks Stadium.
