Kings Point, NY -- Former Kings Point soccer standout forward, Andrew MacKenzie '12, will be representing the United States in the World Military Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan.
MacKenzie played a vital role in helping USMMA advance to three straight NCAA tournaments, including an appearance in the "Elite 8" in 2010. From 2008-2011, he compiled 16 goals, 10 assists, and 42 points for the Mariners.
Now, joining a squad made up of members across all branches of the military, MacKenzie will be representing the United States and Kings Point on a global stage.
"Andrew had an excellent career here and helped our team achieve a great deal of success, said USMMA Head Soccer Coach Michael Smolens, who coached MacKenzie for four years, and will be entering his 24th season at the helm of Merchant Marine soccer in 2013-14. "Making the squad and taking part in this international competition illustrates the type of players we have here and the level of soccer we play."
Among MacKenzie's teammates is Kevin Durr, from the Air Force Academy, who has been First Team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for three straight years, formerly a member of FC Bayern Munich from 2005-07, and a 2013 supplemental draft pick of the Seattle Sounders FC.
The tournament is comprised of 16 teams and will be held from July 2 - July 14. The United States squad is grouped with Oman, Ivory Coast, and Germany in the opening round of play.
The last tournament, held in 2011, was won by Algeria after defeating Egypt by a 1-0 margin in the finals.
The United States will look to place in the top four in the World Military Cup for the first time since its inception in 1946. "It is tremendous that he is representing our country and the Merchant Marine Academy," added Smolens. "Everyone in the Kings Point soccer family wishes him the best of luck."
