Kings Point, NY – The United States Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team has been recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for ethics and sportsmanship, receiving the organization's silver award. The Mariners are one of just four collegiate men's teams, including all NCAA Divisions as well as NAIA, in the entire country to earn the silver award this year. In total, the NSCAA honored nine teams, one from NCAA Division I and eight from NCAA Division III, with silver being the highest honor garnered by any program.
To be eligible for the NSCAA Ethics & Sportsmanship Silver Award a team must not be given a single red card throughout the year and compile only 1-5 yellow cards. The Mariners did not earn more than one yellow card in any game this season.
"It was a challenging season for our team but I am pleased with how our coaches and players reacted to these challenges and how they carried themselves all season long," said Head Coach Michael Smolens. "It is a testament to the type of personnel we have here at the Academy."
The USMMA men's soccer team also received the Landmark Conference's sportsmanship award immediately following the conclusion of the 2012 campaign.
