Olsen earns All-Mid Atlantic first-team honors again

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – For the second consecutive year, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy defender Kurt Olsen has been named a first-team All-Mid Atlantic Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The Charlotte, N.C. native also was selected as the Landmark defender of the year while leading the Mariners' backline.

The 6-2, 195-lb. Olsen has been a key member of the Merchant Marine's backline the past three seasons, which they qualified for the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament.

"Coach [John] Fitzgerald and I are very pleased to see Kurt honored as an All-Region performer," Mariners head coach Mike Smolens said.  "This award is a reflection of our team's success and illustrates the major role he plays within our team.  Kurt has worked very hard and is constantly striving to improve his abilities.

"In addition to being a team leader from his spot as a central defender, Kurt has also scored some very big goals for us.  A captain as a junior, Kurt is truly someone who leads by example. His work ethic, both in matches and in training has 'set the bar' high for his teammates.  He's a fine example of what a student-athlete at the Merchant Marine Academy can become if he works hard enough to achieve his goals."
